The first pic: Man, the are way out in the middle of the street. Did everyone run out in the middle of the road back then? I also like how they had the hose bed next to the driver. The second pic is wild. Those fiberglass hoods are really awesome. Oh and..... WHEELIE!!!!!

I also like how they had the hose bed next to the driver...... That was a wooden hosebed, and you can see that they rebuilt the rear of that truck before 1974. Can anyone tell me where that truck came from?#nosmileys

Can anyone tell me where that truck came from? It was built for the Port Washington Rangers by Ed Akam of A & P Automotive, and sold to the Teddy's Boys when the Road Runner's were formed, before the 1968 season.

Great Pics contibuted to this months Memories. The Massapequa Indians at practice. Check out the McCulloch belt driven supercharger, jutting out of the right side of the hood. This truck was a ground-breaker, and driver Willy Bryson was to build another one for St. James.
Nice drop by the Flower Hills Hose Co. Runts of Port Washington at a very young Hempstead track.
I recall that The Long Island Press was very supportive of the fire service, and ran results and photos of Tournaments on a regular basis.
Does anyone know where their archive exists? A little research would probably recover a few more photos.

Pic of Long Beach Apache team from 74 can be seen at homestead.com/captfxco/LongBeachFireDept.html Would attach the pic, but not sure how to. When did LB run motorized, and what happened to the Ford rig that is in the pic behind them?

West: Great find. That is a good site, especially to a history buff like me.
The truck that you can bearly see in the background, is the same truck pictured in this months Memories feature!
Long Beach purchased that rig from the Flower Hill Hose Company Runts when they took delivery on an Ed Akam truck before the 66' season. That Runts' truck eventually became the Road Runners.
As far as the Apache racing motorized, it was very limted. I can only recall them running C-Hose at the Oceanside drill in the late 60's. I never saw them with a B-Truck, and the only time they ran a full day was at thier battalion drill. #nosmileys#nosmileys

Didn't that Apache Ford C rig in the picture end up in Reynolds channel? I heard that too, but I could never confirm, nor deny, that info. That is the stuff legends are made of... Anyone care to dive?

Great picture on this month Memories page.
Some details to note:
They are running C-Hose with a turn-on man! The turn on man is former rules committee man, and past area mechanic, Willy Bryson. He has a cigarette in his mouth! The hydrant man is left-handed! He is former NYSDTCA Past-President George Beato (67'-69') They are running straight from the side of the hydrant, with no 45 degree adaptor to the street. Oh yeah, it's up the curb, and into the grass!
ps-Anyone think they didn't run HOT back then?? Lookit them dance!
Many thanks to the Bryson family for sharing this photo with us.#nosmileys#nosmileys

Another historic question - in archives on fdracing there is a program for the 67 state drill - apparently it was supposed to be in Colomie in Aug, but got run in Lindy in Sept - why did it get delayed? Whose rig is that a photo of on the cover, and is that the Lindy track?
