Teacher's pet. Seriously Historian, ( and I don't know the exact answer), what Tourney was delayed if not stopped by someone running out and lying down on the track for some kind of protest during a run in Nassau? My Dad would never answer, and my brothers just schrug it off and say, "I don't know, long time ago." (The rest of our family was at a relative's function that day and I never got the story.)

Was the target off to the side back then or was that just a product of them losing control of the nozzle?

What Tourney was delayed if not stopped by someone running out and lying down on the track for some kind of protest during a run in Nassau? The incident you are referring to occurred at the So. N.Y. Drill on June 17th, 1966, which also was the opening of the 4 towns track in Merrick. The drill was being protested by marchers outsides the gates on Merrick Road. The issue was the lack of African-American Firefighters in the volunteer ranks on Long Island. The drill was progressing without any incident when the Yellow Hornets left the line in C-Ladder. At once, 2 men jumped the fence and laid down in the street in front of the speeding truck, at about the 100' foot line. The truck broke hard and steered left, around the 2 men, who did not move, and came to a stop under the arch. The men were arrested by the Nassau County Police, and taken away with little, if any violence. One of the men was Lincoln Lynch, who was the LI director of C.O.R.E. and later became a nationally known civil rights leader, mostly for his militant posture. The drill continued without any further incident, but with a large increased police presence. At the 4th of July Parade, the Hempstead Fire Dept became the focus of further protests, when flyers were handed out to parade watchers, but there were no incidents like the one that occured at the Merrick track that day.

Historian, that was such a good story it got me to sign on to this message board just to tell you. Keep those stories coming.

Thank you Historian, I always wanted to know and nobody around me at least, ever talked about it. (our insular "circle the wagons" mentality that prevails to this day I guess.)
Since I believe that this State is the only one that has developed this competition to such a level, both old fashioned and motorized... Maybe a museum is in order? The volumes of tradition and information you and others have can't be lost. Even if it is on the net, there has gotta to be a way to capture all this and preserve it. What do you think?

I always liked the idea of having a wing at the museum, and build a track at the Firemen's Home in Hudson.
Bring the future (racing) to the past (our older brothers)
I think the area would develop to the needs of a drill, and maybe even could be the site of a State Championship. Which brings me to a point: Why haven't we ever had the Home as the beneficiary of the Charity Drill? #nosmileys

Sad to say, only been up there twice, both quick visits. (bringing former members home for a last alarm) Never got to see the museum, should, but I am sure there is, or should be a display of some sort about racing? Maybe we should lobby FASNY and the directors of the home to make an area.
On the track, I don't know, I heard they seem to be going through some problems just with their upgrade of the building with the local building authorities lately. But no reason there can't be a Hunter / Las Vegas size demo in the parking lot now is there. (Mid Island mall, raced in parking lots before now haven't we, scaffolding is easy to rent?) Could be a good road trip and probably a hoot for some of the guys up there!
Seriously for everyone, remember they have a fund, departments can pass the hat and throw a couple of coins to send to a resident, give a guy some walking around money. Nothing big, they will probably cherish the letters that come with it more. Bring it up with your departments, I know I will, it's been awhile since we did it last.

One week to go before we get a new Pic... Can't wait. Digital photos are nice, but there is nothing like the quality of an old-fashioned large format B&W picture.
Thanks to the great detail, I noticed something about this months photo:
THESE DUDES ARE OUT!!! THEY ARE RIGHT UP ON THE NOZZLE LINE!
THIS WAS A 2OO' COURSE, AND THE MIDDLE COUPLING IS RIGHT ON THE 150' LINE. A GREAT EFFORT.
