There is some reference that the drill was started in Albany, and completed later that September. I don't think that 3 man ladder was ever started. The drill was about to begin whe the arch came down. I have seen some video of the the aftermath, and there are no trucks in site, indicating that they weren't about to start B-Ladder.
The C-Truck on the cover of the program was originally built from scratch by the Lindenhurst Snails in the mid 50's. They called it "Baby Doll" and later sold it to St. James (it can be seen on the alumni section of thier website). They in turn sold it to the Inwood Mud Ducks.
The picture on the cover of the program is the St. James Wildcats running C-Hose at the previous state drill held in Albany in 1962.

I am old enough to have been there, but not old enough to be racing yet. The drill had not started, Bay Shore was running 1st, Harry was running 3rd man, I believe, he said that they did not want to run on that arch, minutes later the giant funnel started, the wooden ladder twirlled around in a huge circle with the top ending up on the ground and the spikes in the air, one offical rode the ladder to the ground. Then the wild scene started, people running everywhere, using chief's station wagons as ambulances, even back then the vollies shined through with their first aid and medical training or it could have been alot worse.

Another great photo submission of a team that was forgotten by most. Glad to see they are back on the old fashioned circuit.
We can see the B-Truck that went to the Teddy's Boys, and then the Sea Breeze, and is still in use.
You can also see the diffculty in running at Floral Park. The trees covered the entire course, leaving a maple sap residue, never drying, making it the most slippery course, perhaps ever run. It was run on Floral Blvd, and the C contests had to pass through an intersection that had a traffic light.
Despite it all, it was a great drill, and I recall the Tent area under the railroad tracks. Nobody could actually pitch a tent there! Teams would ask the neighbors, and sometimes use a front lawn for the tent!
The last motorized drill run on that street in Floral Park was the South Shore Invitational on Aug 5, 1972.

I don't deny the date of the poster, or Historian, but grew up around there and really don't remember Floral Blvd. having blacktop as early as '61. Looks more like '63, could be wrong, I was usually in the stands with Mom watching my Dad and Brothers at that time, and what a goof nowadays, all the Nuns used to come out and watch from Our Lady of Victory. Try that now! Besides the trees, I remember the concrete slab street with tar seams. Now a question Historian. How many sewercap clicks to warn the hydrant man for his mark on C hydrant on Floral Blvd.? (Remember it was run in the center of the track back then)

I forgot to add the bonus question.
Who hit the Nassau scaffolding arch with a B rig, at Floral Park in the sixties and during what event and when?

Wow. I got nothin' on how many sewer caps it was before you got to the hydrant! This month picture can't be 1963 because No. Mass. had shut it down that year. I do recall that every run at Floral Park was quite a ride......and I will add that the driver for an unnamed team from Hempstead that had yellow C truck once got off the gas during a speed ladder run because the light at the Carnation Avenue intersection had changed!?!?! Really!!.......
I am gonna take a guess at the bonus question. I vaguely recall the Great Neck Alerts in B-Hose hitting the arch in Floral Park....Am I right?
Now back at ya, with who hit the hydrant in CI? What team, truck, and event?

Probably right about the date, I was very young at the time stated. (wow, what an escape on the age thing huh!) Second sewercap. Again, could have been the Alerts at one time, but the one I saw hit was the Duds B rig, (now that's a blast from the past!)
Gotta hand it to you, I'm out of your league so you have to get a multi answer.
Bayport B "tapped" the hydrant in combo at a Town drill.
I'm coming up with the Clamdiggers in C hose for the solid hit but when I asked someone to confirm it for me, Bangtails came to mind.
I'll go for Woodmere.

Again, now that I think about it... The Duds had a member of their department that was someone at Long Island Trust, back in the day and provided for them, single jacket hose, allegedly purchased for standpipe hose for the main office? (rather than cutting off the outer jackets?) Just a vague memory, but I seem to remember the officials looking funny and asking questions. Maybe they were the first to play with the hose, not that they got anywhere, but ..

Did this link open for any of you - it did not for me. Curious what went from the Duds to the frogs?
