This months Memories Photos are some great shots of a team that was just starting to get things together. Remember, a year later, they were in a position to win the 74' State Drill, and with a winning bucket shot, could have created a tie. (they finished with 10 points). 2 racing greats are pictured. Out front is Muzzy (Ex-Cheif Henry Marzola) who was a great hydrantman, and later drove. To the upper left is Mootsy (James Thomas) who was into his 4th decade of FR Racing at this point (!) and was one of the best nozzlemen to ever step on the course.

Cool memories pic for July of the Mustangs C that eventually went on to Levittown. The picture was taken at a newly built Denton Ave. track in Garden City Park. If you look in the background beyond the fence, you could see that the parking lot was not even built yet.

Thanks to Stan Dybus for the photos on Memories this month. This was a great era for the Minutemen, where they took every shot to the limit. They had a unique style, where the ladder was high in the truck when they started, but maybe was too high on exit.. (check out the digger on his tippy-toes!) They got off SMOKIN' HOT. Driver: John Raphan (Sp), Diggers: Bo Link and Billy Mastro, Climber: John Mastro, Thrower: Kenny Paradise These boys raced hard, and partied even harder!

C. Gombert is indeed related to Cookie from St.James...I believe Cookie was originally from Roosevelt. There is actually a "Gombert Place" in Roosevelt that was named after the family.
The J. Abrams in the second pic is not Jack and Skip's dad. He may be related but Jack and Skip's dad was Thurland Abrams, known as Abe and by some as TJ I think.
There were three different teams from Roosevelt over the years...The Brush Rabits from Hose 1, the Bearcats from Hose 3, and the Rum Pointers which was a dept team

Wow! yes, C. Gombert also known as Charlie was Cookie's older brother, he didn't race long but I know he gave it a go. " Bunny" Gombert, thier dad, also known by his real name "Valentine" ran with West Hempstesd, and Roosevelt, and earned several state championships back in the day. I have some great pix from then.

Regardless of the quality, it documents a GREAT team's best performance in the state drill. The Rough Riders scored 30 out of 40 points that day, with 6 first place runs, and also set a new State Record in C-Ladder at 10.37.
Oddly, this was a contest they did not score in. (they also did not score in 3-Man Ladder)
This is one missing scorecard that deserves to posted on the Archive.

Ya know jeff that`s a great question, but i bet i know where a bunch of the stuff is. Besides stuff getting thrown out and state tourn trophy`s being given away to the friggin p.a.l. league. I really couldn`t tell ya. But it really pises me off. Alot of people have come to my firehouse and seen what we have, we only have 1 full set of state trophy`s out of seven. it`s a friggin shame
