HP also originator of charity drill. Let me clarify this one. Harry was influential in bringing back a great idea from the 50's...and he desrves the credit for that. In the early 50's the drill teams of both counties held a drill for the benfit of Infantile Paralysis.... The Polio Tournament. It was a great event that raised thousands for a good cause.

I think Dan Salerno from the Road Runners should be considered. The man has raced for over 20 years and ran every spot there is. Back in the day when he was a little younger and a little lighter he was a hell of a hydrent man.

AS I recall he got that name because of his speed (he beat a dog in a footrace ie. "Dog Beater"). He died recently.

HERE IS MINE FROM A PREVIOUS POST: Re: Robert "Dogbeater" Hornosky has passed away.. « Reply #2 on Jul 24, 2003, 4:36pm » -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- I am truly saddend by this news. For you young guns, Dogbeater was a legendary figure. He was the climber for the great Rough Rider dynasty and held the State Record in B-Ladder with a 5.27, set at North Bellmore from 7/12/58, until it was broken by West Sayville's 5.22 in Woodmere on 8/7/76. 18 years his record stood at the top.... And no, the stories about that run are not true; they did not shift the truck over the timing hose, it was a 6,000 lb truck, and he did start climbing at a rung not more than 50" from the tip of the spikes. He did it the old-school way, with a B-Truck that was powered by an old Cadillac engine. He did not work at the Sterling Laundry and did not practice at Lunch and Coffee breaks.... When finally given the benefit of a new 426 Dodge Ramcharger engine in his C-Truck in 1964, he took 3/10ths off the C-Ladder record in 2 weeks. The old record was 10.66 by East Meadow and at the Floral Park South Shore drill, they ran a 10.63, and followed up with a blistering 10.37 at the State Drill in Hempstead. He was a great guy who would come out when the Steamer's hosted the Drill Teams Capt's meeting and cook up a mess of Oyster Fritters for the boys. Raise a glass to a great racer.
