The post about Spencer Speedway and the 1979 State Drill is awesome. I am curious to know more about previous State tracks/hosts. If you can remember anything about who actually hosted State Drills, (the rule book only lists track site), and/or exactly where the tracks were located, post here. P.S. West Sayville's website has a great story about the '47 States at Catskill www.wsfd.com/histhomeframe.htm

The 1981 state parade was held in Rotterdam NY and the tournament was held at the Lebonan Valley Speedway. The host for the FASNY convention that year was The Pine Grove Fire Department. North Lindenhurst won the drill.

When the state parade and drill was held in Albany previous to 1981 the drill was held on Rail Road Avenue off of Fuller Road in the Town Of Colonie. That is where they had the arch collapse in 1967. I was told the arch belonged to Hicksville and was brought upstate to be used for the state drill.

The 1982 state drill was held high on a mountain in Olean, N.Y. on an airport runway. It was the coldest drill I had ever been to. In fact by the time we got to run buckets we were running in the SNOW! Snow flurries in August, that was the only time that I saw that at any drill.

The Suffolk County GIS department has developed a new map (unfortunately it appears to only be available on the County's internal network) which contains, among other things, aerial photos of much of the county from 1947, 1962, 1970, 1978, 1984, 2001, 2004, 2006 & 2007. On the 1962 map, I found a grainy image of the old Track on Harrison Av in Riverhead, site of the 1960 NYS State Drill. The arch and some of the lines can be seen. The arch was I/F/O 751 Harrison, and the C-Hose starting line I/F/O #771. The track ran south to north.
If anyone can let me know where the Suffolk Cty Fairgrounds were, I will try and locate that and figure out how to get both images posted to this board.

I am drawing a blank, what year did the pea pickers hit the arch? I recall it being near a race track. There was a modified race going behind where we were racing. Was it 79 at Lebanon?
