Looks like the Pea Pickers made the trek down to Hempstead for this one.

Did you notice the size of the crowd? There was a wheel on the hydrant and no unending water test to drive everyone away!

So, Hicksville won this drill? From the pictures it looks like it's either Hicksville or East Meadow who won. Someone from Hicksville/East Meadow have info about this? To me it looks like it's Hicksville based on the team picture because they're each holding "oscars." (For the laymen: Oscars are (or were) Individual-Mini Trophies given out to the winning team.) East Meadow may have won a leg trophy for another event.
Also, from what I know, 1949 was the first year of the Hempstead Invite. The Hempstead Invite was always held on July 4th, but the drill pictured above occurred on 8/27/1949. So I'm wondering: was the first ever Hempstead drill on 8/27/49? OR is the drill pictured above just another invite that Hempstead had that year? (therefore meaning the first ever drill was on 7/4/1949.)
Anyone? Anyone?

Based on the Truss photos NHP had their 7th annual drill on July 4, 1950; so may have been after this that Hemp started their drill on the 4th.

JoJo: Thank you for finding these wonderful pictures! Keep em' coming!
Twan: I am pretty sure the tradition of the Hempstead drill being held on, or near, July 4th began with the dedication of the new track on Weir Street.
If I remember correctly, it actually occured on Monday, July 5, 1954, as the 4th fell on a Sunday that year. A quick check of the dedication plaque can confrim this.
There were a couple of unique features on the Madison Avenue track. The track was set with the hydrant 125' from the arch, so for the B & C hose events, the target was well under the arch. Also, the start of C-Hose was close to the bend in the road at Mill Road (now Peninsula Blvd) and you had to line up at the left side curb to cut down the angle.....!
