These are excellent; note the MP discharge line out the hydrant side and also piped to the rear (similar to some of the upstate teams even now). Like the cig going on the hydrant man.

I think most of the shots are of Combination Hose & Pump. Back in the '60s it was a fairly common event that was run with the Big 8. From what i've seen and heard, most teams that ran it had 2 discharges on the B trucks(the right side for easy reconnection from hydrant to truck)and drivers side for regular Pump runs.

Historian would know better, we used to have a huge copper pipe setup that ran under the seat and was attached for that event. I think the Terrace is the last State Record holder for that event in regular play. Great to see the old track on Beaverdam Road, now its in the parking lot where the stands are in the picture. Real good memories until that fateful Labor day. Oh well..

Please forgive my lack of history here, but what is the fateful Labor Day you are referring to?

Labor Day was run in Islip Terrace on Beaver Dam Rd. back in the 80's. On Labor Day1986-1989 sorry not sure which one Hagerman Gamblers were on the line for C-ladder or C-hose again sorry not sure they went into crowd with the truck and ran over a bunch of Hoboes it was the last time a touney was run on a regular street in the town of Islip. Then they got guard rails.

Was 1986, C Hose, truck went through snow fence on tagret side of the track/street and some members of Amityville were hit. Very somber. Thankfully, no life threatening injuries.

There were permanant guardrails on the stands side, just a snow fence on the side with, I believe just two houses and woods on the hydrant side and a permanent timber arch over the street. Dummy hydrant was piped all the way under the street, under the stands to the back fence where the current track is now. Pumper and tank supply at that time.

From what i've seen and heard, most teams that ran it had 2 discharges on the B trucks(the right side for easy reconnection from hydrant to truck)and drivers side for regular Pump runs. Correct. In the 60's, Combo was run as part of the Big-12 in the Suffolk County, Town of Islip, and East Islip, then the Islip Terrace Drill. It as last regularly run in Nassau County at Hicksville, in the late 50's. Most B-Rigs had both an intake and a discharge on each side. That is because it was permissable to have the Hydrant on either side of the course. Again, Hicksville, may have been the last place we ran with a hydrant on the left side of the course. Then, the right-sided hydrant rule came into place, and later the development of the Big-8, made Combination the odd contest out. Soon, pumps with multiple intakes and discharges were obsolete. #nosmileys

Excellent photos. What's the story behind the wrecked front end on the C? And is that a camaro front end on one of the C - when did they have that?

At the continued State Drill in September 1967 at Lindenhurst, the Rinky Dinks bent the tie rod on the front end of that C-Truck going into the hydrant. Both wheels flopped outward and the truck plowed. Believe it or not, the hydrantman hit the plug, and the driver gassed his way to the nozzleline. The breaker and nozzleman got off, and just missed, getting washed out in a spectaclar run.
All things condiered (front end failure) we were pretty lucky it wasn't worse.
It was tough luck for the Rinky Dinks, because they had just won both ladder contests, and were 1 point behind the eventual winner, the Rough Riders, and had a better hose team that year. It ruined thier day, and they didn't get another point.....
The Rinky Dinks got the Rich Roper built C, with the fiberglass Camaro nose, in the early 70's.

Is anyone else having trouble accessing the drill photos on nyfirephoto.com? What do you need to do to access these photos? Thanks
