The top video might be the 1952 State Drill in East Rochester. I gotta go back and find some pictures I know I have posted, but there appears to be a service station on the right at the end by the arch that resembles the one in photos I have.....

driver7789: I think the first 4 minutes are from the 1952 State Drill in East Rochester. (It has the Syosset Nightraiders are running thier 51' Ford C-truck)
Scenes from 4:09 thru 7:32 are from Syracuse in 1950.
I think the last part of that film may be Coessens Park, in Amsterdam, site of the 1953 State Drill.

geek: it was hard to tell because they didn't use a gate on the hydrant in all drills until 1954-that was the confusing part.

So I get this right, are you saying that 1954 was the year they went from a wheel on top of the hydrant to a 1/4-turn ball valve such as is used today?

Not all the time. It was a crap shoot what kind of hydrant you were going to competing with. Some had wheels, and some had 1/4 turn valves, but right about then is when they went completely 1/4.

In the second film, at 2:30 into it, whats the deal with the Official strolling on the course as the event is being run? Looks like a protest to me.
