To anyone from Sayville (or anyone else who might know): The NYS Firefighter's Museum in Hudson has a C-Truck on display that last belonged to the Bluejays (see photo below). The curator is making up a sign to go on it, and would like to know the history of that rig - when it was first built, who else may have owned it first, if any records were broken with it, etc. Any information I can give her would be greatly appreciated! fdracing.911pictures.com/Bluejays C-Truck.jpg[/img]

Sayville was the second owner of this C rig. It was built for and previously owned by the East Meadow Meadowlarks.

That truck was one of many built by Ed Akam of A & P Automotive of Port Washington. He built it for the Meadowlarks for the 1976 or 77 season.

I believe it was built for the 78 season. In the 77 Wide World of Sports, East Meadow was still running the Corvette (seen below). 1988 was the last year of the motorized Meadowlarks so it must have been aquired by Sayville in 89 or 90.

I had always heard that the old Blue Jays C rig was up at the Firemen's Home, but was told that it was their 73 style El Camino C rig. Were the stories I had heard incorrect or do they have both of the Sayville C rigs up there?

No, it's just the one - the only other rig there is Blue Point's B-truck

Does anybody know how many c-trucks Eddie Akam of A & P Automotive built? I know of the twins Syosset and St James. Did he build all the c-trucks for Port Washington?

It amazes me how we can have one subject turn into another. None the less, Eddie Akam built many trucks. The last truck he built was Wyandanch. Previous to that was it's sister truck for the Port Washington Roadrunners. That is the truck that Louisville is now running. Along with the previously mentioned Syosset and St. James trucks there were at least 3 others.Manhasset - Lakeville , which went to Islip Terrace for a short run before getting cut up for scrap. The East Meadow truck as pictured above that went to Sayville and currently resides in the lap of luxurious retirement at the Fireman's Home on the Hudson. Eddie also built Central Islip Hoboes C truck that set many records and won more than it's share of championships. This truck is currently in the hands of the North Greece Lil Squirts. The generation of trucks that he built before the above paragraph would include Port Washington Rangers that went to Oyster Bay Teddies Boys. It had a fiberglass 40-41 Willys nose on it. Also of this generation was the Port Washington Road Runners C truck that went to Elmont. It had a fiberglass 33 Willys nose on it. I believe he also built the Port Washington Rowdies Ctruck that went to Hicksville. It also had the 33 Willys nose on it. Eventually Hicksville changed the nose to some aluminum tin work. If you look through all the pages here on Digger, all of these trucks are immortalized for the memories of those of us who remember and for the imaginations of those who never saw them, but can still hear them rumble and roar in the pictures on this glorious site. If anyone can add to this account, please chime in with further information and stories of the glory days of yesteryear!

Manhasset - Lakeville , which went to Islip Terrace for a short run before getting cut up for scrap.
The Terrace C from Manhasset was made a "center ride" in house the second season then sent to Tommy Baldwin for "modifications". Prior to all that is was a duplicate to St. James I believe. During the "modification" process there was a set of cross rails that were painted yellow. The man had no idea if they were required and it was late at night with nobody available to ask so he incorporated them without asking in between the new rails at the same location. So Akam and Tommy live on!

Kevin, It's funny you mention the 33-41 Willy nose...there's a truck on the track right now that still uses a Willy nose....
The CI B truck scoop, mounted onto the hood, is actually the end of the hood from a 1938 (I think) Willy nose. It was a junkyard job, they cut the end of the hood, then spun it around and mounted it to the hood of the Ford. Check it out sometime, you'll recognize it right away.

This too was an Ed Akam creation: The Ranchero was purchased from Mineola Ford in the winter of 70-71. It was ordered with the 429ci, 4bbl Cobra Jet engine, HD C-6 transmission, and 4.56 Detroit Locker rear end. Upon delivery, it was brought up to Ed's shop in Port, and he promptly chopped the back off of it, and built the hosebed and step. One of the co-chairs of the committee to make that purchase was Bob Marra......yes, that Bob Marra.
