Isn't this great, the web site is bringing old friends back together. One still on Long Island and the other down in warm and sunny Florida. Now lets start a new thread with pumpnbuckets and Tribe25 telling us what was it like to take the first ride on a brand new truck. Did Willie put her on the line with four guys on board and go balls to the wall or did he take a few short bursts to make sure minor things like the brakes worked? Tell us what kind of thoughts were going thru your minds. What were Willies comments at the end of the test session. After all lets remember this was a totally new design with 4 wheels up front. One must have been wondering how straight it would go. Would it handle? Would the extra brakes work too well? Bill Bryson was quite the innovator, but his idea might have had the guys on the back wondering if he went off the deep end or did he just revolutionize the sport.
It's winter time ,so lets do a little bit of bench racing. For anyone who is not familiar with the term, it is a bunch of guys sitting around talking about racing when they are not out racing. Sometimes the stories can be a little bit of a stretch of the truth.
Our current "C" truck was originally built with an adjustable wheelbase of 112 to 115 inches. On its first test session in Oct. 1993 she was still bare aluminum and weighed 2200 lbs. on the nose. After a number of short runs such as B-Ladder or B- Hose shots, Tom Jensen from Bayport who built the truck said "Put her on the line and lets see what she'll do" . I launched it with the converter and instantly the front wheels were five feet in the air. After riding out the wheelie and stopping the truck and hearing the HOLY S**T comments from the guys on the back, I said " Might as well just put it on the trailer and get a longer driveshaft made because I think we need to be all 115 inches.

Uncle Kev ...... the one thing about Willy just like Harry the hat and Wilber Young they only knew one way to drive....Balls to the wall.... The first ride I thought I would look so cool to my other team mates if I tryed to get off at the Hydrant the key word here is tryed.. I swear Willy just past his foot over the brake .. But I wouldnt do it any other way.. ;D P.S. Its F**king COLD In "Sunny" south FLA

Thanks for responding back Tribe. While you are indoors trying to keep warm in sunny Fla. elaborate a little more on this story. What did Willie think of his new creation? Did other guys on your team want to go for a ride after you did. Was this during the time period when Massapequa's "C" was not in service and some of the guys were never on one? This sounds like you could write a good story here.
Maybe Historian needs to prod a story out of you here. Bill Bryson stories are good history that needs to be in print for all time. Some day we need to arrange a old timers coffee clotch to get on video and have some good stories to treasure for all time. What do you think of that Stan. That would be a great one for your collection.

kev...the c truck was still in service at that time (32 ford that willy built in 53)so we did have guys that were used to the "c" ride... but it did go out shortly after that because of a steering box problem and we never used it after that.we thought that inwoods truck was unreal.it did have the 4 wheels up front for the braking but wasnt the first 6 wheeler ..everyone knows lindy had the first one...willy"s design was after the john player special that was on the formula one circut at the time..tribe did get off but i was told to "stay on"by a senior member...inwood did remove the second set of wheels to look like a conventional "c" truck after a while though...
